Collection: Pirate Minifigures

LEGO® Pirate Themes

The original LEGO® Pirates sets, launched in 1989, are said to be inspired by popular pirate movies of the 1980s, such as "The Goonies" and "Pirates of Penzance." LEGO® designers aimed to bring the excitement of pirate life into homes, creating sets with custom sails, detailed pirate ships, and unique printed pieces for pirate Minifigures. These innovations made LEGO® Pirates an instant hit, loved by children and adults alike, and established it as one of LEGO®’s most enduring themes.

The LEGO® Pirates theme began with the legendary pirate ship, Black Seas Barracuda (set 6285). This iconic ship featured intricate details and a full crew of pirate Minifigures, including the famous Captain Redbeard. The set was so popular it was re-released twice: in 2002 as set 10040 and in 2020 as the LEGO® Ideas set 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay. Over the years, the Pirate theme expanded to include English and Spanish armadas, islanders, mermaids, and even skeleton warriors, offering a wide variety of Minifigures for every fan. In total, there are around 198 LEGO® pirate Minifigures, depending on how you define the category.

In addition to its vast lineup of Minifigures, the LEGO® Pirate theme boasts an impressive fleet of ships. From clippers to the beloved Skull's Eye Schooner (set 6286), and other classics like Brickbeard's Bounty and Imperial Flagship, LEGO® has kept the high seas alive in brick form. Fans even enjoyed a Pirate Advent Calendar in 2009, adding holiday cheer to their pirate adventures.

Different LEGO® Pirate Minifigures

The very first LEGO® Pirate Minifigure was introduced in 1989 as part of the "Imperial Soldiers" set. This bluecoat soldier, equipped with a tricorn hat, musket, and sword, set the stage for the pirate adventures that followed.

Later that year, LEGO® released the first true pirate Minifigures with their distinctive accessories and features. These included hooks for hands, peg legs, and eye patches, giving them a classic pirate appearance. Over the years, LEGO® Pirate Minifigures have evolved to feature a wide variety of outfits and accessories such as bandanas, eyepatches, and pirate hats. Their weapons have also diversified, ranging from swords and muskets to grappling hooks and flintlock pistols.

LEGO® Pirate Minifigures have appeared in numerous product lines, including the classic 1990s sets and modern themes inspired by pirate-themed movies and shows. These include Pirates of the Caribbean and LEGO® Ninjago: Skybound. Whether you're a fan of classic LEGO® pirates or newer takes on the theme, there's something for every builder.
